CEDAR (The Central European Environmental Data Request Facility) 1991-1997

In 1991, the International Society for Environmental Protection was selected by the Austrian Ministry for the Environment, Youth and Family to administer CEDAR, the Central European Environmental Data Request Facility. CEDAR was created to provide computing and Internetworking facilities to support international data exchange with the Central and Eastern European environmental community. Focusing at first mainly Central and Eastern European countries, CEDAR's activities expanded quickly to an audience all over the world.

CEDAR dealt with environmental data concerning Europe as well as countries where CEDAR's partners, like UNEP's Environmental Information Network INFOTERRA, were planning their activities. CEDAR acted as a clearing house and communication focus for environmental information. A database of environmentally relevant links, distributed all over the world, allowed for specific search for online environmental information.

In 1992, CEDAR was designated as the INFOTERRA Internet node and Regional Service Centre for Central and Eastern Europe, and worked together with the Austrian Federal Environment Agency and other regional and global NFPs to support environmental information dissemination.

The Danube Information System (DANIS), compiled by the Centre for Eco-Information and Technology in Bratislava, provided information on experts, administrative activities, conferences, research projects, consulting services, and companies working in the Danube River Basin.

CEDAR has been quite successful since its inception in October 1994 and had a total of about 133.000 accesses in August, 1997. However, in 1998 funding of the Austrian Ministry of Environment expired, and the regular update of information was no longer possible.

In the end of 1999 ISEP decided to reanimate CEDAR. Additional support came from UNEP/INFOTERRA who felt a need for the continuation of a reliable partnership with it's regional service center for Europe. Thus, CEDAR was revised and got a new layout and navigation. Moreover, the mailing list management was completely reorganised and adapted to user needs.

CEDAR Mailing Lists

Due to CEDAR's co-operation with UNEP, CEDAR maintains several UNEP mailing lists as well as one mailing list for the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Youth and Family (WASTE, see below).
